The amazing, the mighty and the uncanny join forces to save New York. Which Marvel super hero will you choose?
Super hero scramble
When the Silver Surfer's surfboard is shattered by a Doctor Doom energy blast, ultra powerful Cosmic Bricks with the capacity to destroy the world rain down upon Manhattan. What do you do when these shiny blocks tumble out of the sky and into your neighbourhood? Well, in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes on PlayStation 4, that all depends on whose lycra costume you're squeezed into.
Handy with an enchanted hammer? Find yourself climbing the walls? Does the tiniest bit of drama send you into a green-tinged rage? Ah, then you must be playing as the mighty Thor, the Amazing Spider-Man or the Hulk. And as some of the Marvel Universe's most famous heroes, that means you'll be dead set on stopping Doctor Doom and Loki's plan to round up the Cosmic Bricks and use them for a cataclysmic death ray.
Manhattan is both battle ground and limitless sand pit as you zip between a cast of more than 150 of the lightning fast, extraordinarily strong or unspeakably evil. From Iron Man to Ant-Man, Captain America to Union Jack, there's a hero or villain to suit you. Just make sure you put the block on Doctor Doom and Loki.
Marvel in Manhattan
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes may be set within New York City, but there's an entire universe to uncover. From the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier hovering high above Manhattan to Marvel HQ itself – if you see it, you can explore it. And probably smash it into hundreds of bricks just by sneezing, if you're the Hulk.
Immediately the game throws the sensitive green giant into a stand-off with Abomination and Sandman in Grand Central Station, and it's an early chance to see the game shine on PS4. As you bash minions and hurl chunks of brickwork at your enemies, the ground around you swirls with sand so realistic you can almost count the grains.
Elsewhere, secret hideouts full of collectibles are waiting to be discovered and the city itself is a treasure trove of cult Marvel characters, including Howard the Duck – look out for the film star fowl's attack on the offices of his creator. You'll even visit Asgard, the home of Thor and Loki.
Keep an ear out, too, for the vocal talents of Troy Baker and Nolan North. You'll know them better as The Last of Us hero Joel and Uncharted's Nathan Drake, respectively.
Bricks and pieces
You don't have to transform into a rampaging mutant to turn New York City into an especially messy playroom. It doesn't matter who you play as, because the aim is simple, never-ending fun: smash everything in your path. And if you can't, then try throwing something at it instead.
Mister Fantastic can turn into a giant pair of bolt cutters or squeeze through grates, Captain America's shield doubles up as a handy key, while the Hulk... well, you know what he does.
Each level can be replayed so you can mop up every last LEGO stud. You can then exchange these for new customisation options, powers and characters, which you can use to access hidden areas and unlock new cutscenes.
Wondering who the most powerful figure in the game might be? Why, that's Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee, of course, boasting the abilities of Hulk, Mister Fantastic and Wolverine. Answer his cries for help in each mission to unlock him as a playable character and become a silver-haired super hero.
